couldn’t stand to stay in paradise
until I found a state of denial

we must have been double-crossed
by the stars a dozen times
the lines on our palms spelling out poetry
in convoluted lines

they say distance makes the heart grow fonder
but the gulf between us was too big to fill
the lines that were meant to connect us

our lives spiraled together
like highway four leaf clovers
dotting the plains in the same pattern
over and over and over

and even though those strip malls
look the same on both coasts
the plumes of smog rising heavenward
remind me more and more of ghosts
